ABOUTI am interested in how environments shape and control the distribution, diversity, and ecosystem functioning of deep-sea communities and how human activities, climate changes, or natural disturbances may affect these biological attributes. His recent works focus on two general areas. One uses macroecological approaches to study environmental controls on the deep-sea ecosystem at broad spatial and long-term time scales. The other is a multi-year study on the high-energy, active submarine canyons off SW Taiwan. He is interested in how the submarine canyons of different origins, evolutions, and morphologies may affect the benthic communities. How does the heterogeneous seafloor off SW Taiwan contribute to the regional diversity and carbon cycling of the otherwise monotonous muddy seafloor? He hopes to answer these questions to understand the ecological contribution of these geologically prominent but little-studied ecosystems.
